The Story of the Black Swan

The phrase "black swan" derives from a Latin expression; its oldest known occurrence is the poet Juvenal's characterisation of something being "rara avis in terris nigroque simillima cygno" ("a rare bird in the lands, very much like a black swan").

Today the black swan metaphor coined by Nassim Nicholas Taleb is commonly used as a surprise event with a significant impact, which, in hindsight, easily is rationalised as both explainable and predictable.

Black Swan Consulting works with life sciences companies and leaders focused on improving performance, who understand that past success is no guarantee of future advantage. Our name reflects a core insight echoed in Yuval Noah Harari’s work: organizations are not limited by what they know, but by the assumptions they never question. In an industry shaped by scientific uncertainty, regulatory complexity, and rapidly shifting ecosystems, the greatest risks—and opportunities—often emerge from blind spots rather than visible threats.

Through consulting, advisory, and executive coaching, Black Swan Consulting helps life sciences current and future leaders' surface what they don’t yet see. We challenge inherited narratives, expose hidden interdependencies across functions and regions, and strengthen decision-making under uncertainty.

In complex, high-stakes environments, what you don’t know will not benefit your company—but learning to identify, test, and adapt to the unknown will.
